In Brazil is the spring time and in China seems to be as well, as everybody are falling in love. First, my friend fall in love with Chinese guy - 26 years old boy, who never had any girlfriends. The reason for such monkish behavior is high requirements for studies.
At the moment, I’m in Tsinghua University - one of the leading universities in China where it’s hard to get in and once you are there, it will be no time to rest or sleep. Almost every Chinese would dream to be accepted to this university or to Pequim University. Tsinghua is really strong in exacts and Pequim University in social science…
So, going back to the story of my friend, the guy she foll in love with is studying in Literature. You would think that it’s a very easy major, but he studies everyday until 22 o'clock in the library, where I never find the free space to study. So he has almost no time for my roommate. She, being a western girl, had a hard time to accept this perfervid devotion to study and was impassioned to see him again.
In general, Chinese man would not really do a first step or take initiatives. They are shy and timid in the majority, but of course there are many exceptions. Knowing that, she decided to do a first step from friends to lovers and said that she likes him. He was really lost, but replied that he’s happy to have her in his live. Than, once she accidentally hugged him, out of scare as she almost fell from a bike, but as he was not really used to have any female attention he was surprised and got frozen. He needs to study four more years and doesn’t have time for a girlfriend, he explained to her. Here in China guys would normally finish their study first and only after will search for a girlfriend or future wife, as they don’t have time for the relationship during the study, she says.
Well, honestly, I see many couple in the university campus and I think that they would find a space to the relationship, but indeed such devotion to study I’ve never seen in my life.
My another, already a Chinese friend as well foll in love with Chinese guy, but it seems that he didn’t share the same feelings. After few dates, she said to him that she’s in love and she thinks a lot about him, failing to concentrate on her study. Than, guy says that if these relationship disturb her study they needs to stop seeing each other! It’s just unbelievably for my understanding how you can stop dating a guy just because it disturbs your concentration on study, but for them it seams to be reasonable. Well, after talking for a while we discovered with my friend that actually he seems to love his ex-girlfriend and that’s a real reason for him to ask for a break. Yet, I was really surprise to hear in both stories such a big place they would devote for studying, that they would even refuse to see each other.
Indeed, I China with population of over a billion and huge competition in everything (even for a place in lift), it’s not surprising that education is one of the tool for young generation to succeed. If student study hard and has money, he could enter good University, than if he finishes it he would get a good job and salary. If he would not…well, that’s already another story.
